Computer Vision with openFrameworks

What You Will Learn

Learn the fundamentals of tracking motion with a camera! Computer vision is a special strength of the openFrameworks C++ toolkit, a mainstay of interactive art for over a decade. It’s well worth adding to your arsenal if you work in new media and want to explore possibilities for interaction beyond standard controllers.

This two-part introductory-level workshop is ideal for people interested in building interactive installations, developing AR applications, those looking to switch from Processing to openFrameworks, or just learning more about openFrameworks in general. To get the most out of this course, you should have a little prior experience with at least one programming language. Familiarity with any similar creative-coding tools like Processing, p5.js, or Unity 3D C# (preferred).

What is openFrameworks?

openFrameworks is an open source C++ toolkit for creative coding. for more information about openFrameworks, please visit this link.

Workshop Prerequisites

Prior experience with at least one coding language. Familiarity with any similar creative-coding tools like Processing, p5.js, or Unity 3D C# (preferred).

The environments most commonly used with openFrameworks, Visual Studio and Xcode, are fairly challenging for beginners, so students who are completely new to coding will benefit from advance practice; I recommend looking at these tutorials.

What Do I Need For This Workshop?

Please bring the hardware listed below and have the software installed before the workshop! Unfortunately, we cannot supply computers at this time. ** IMPORTANT ** Ensure you download all of software before the workshop. Please bring a laptop set up with an environment you can use to make openFrameworks apps --the most common being Visual Studio for Windows and Xcode for Mac. ** You have to do this ahead of the workshop because they're each huge apps -- almost 10GB -- and their standard install has to be done online.**

Workshop Attendance: In the case of the workshop not meeting a minimum amount of attendees, fees will be fully refunded. Limited spaces available, so book soon!

Cancellation Policy: To ensure participant attendance, if you have registered for the workshop you must cancel your booking at least seven days before the workshop for a refund.

Payment: Registration for workshop is through Eventbrite. If you do not wish to use Eventbrite you can pay in person at the Electric Perfume storefront. Contact us in advance to arrange a time to come in. We accept credit and cash only. Payment in person must be received by the day prior to the date of the workshop.

About the Instructor

Nick Fox-Gieg is an animator and creative technologist based in Toronto; his awards include a 2012 Eyebeam Fellowship and the jury prize for Best Animated Short at SXSW 2010. Most recently, he’s been working on virtual reality projects at Framestore and Google Creative Lab.
